Who is on the Lord’s side?

“In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.” Judges 21:25

When a body of people lacks leadership they lose their direction.  They begin to lose cohesiveness and everyone is turned to their own way.  Romans 3:12 says, “All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”  When people begin to turn towards their own way, they lose sight of God, just as the Israelites did.  Our country has lost its way.  The pervasive attitude throughout our nation is “what’s good for you is good for you and what’s good for me is good for me.”  This humanistic worldview is exactly the same behavior that we see in the passage above.  Today, everyone is doing as they see fit, this includes defining marriage on their own terms, supporting abortion, embracing world religions, rampant drug and alcohol use, divorce, turning a blind eye to every evil imaginable.

Our present condition is reminiscent of when Moses went up to Mt. Sinai to receive the 10 Commandments and he was gone so long that the people turned to idolatry and depravity.  Exodus 32:7-8 “And the Lord said to Moses, “Go, get down! For your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves. They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them.”  Throughout history, including that of the Israelites, a leader has stepped up when they were needed most.  For Israel, it was during times of rebellion when Joshua, Gideon, Samson, Samuel, and David stepped forward to lead.  In more modern times it has been those great revivalists like Martin Luther, John Calvin, Charles Spurgeon, John Wesley, and others that have led people out of darkness.  My fear is that today we are laying the groundwork for a “false” leader to step forward and that in our desire for leadership, we end up following the wrong person.

What’s it going to take for us to wake up? Where are our real leaders? Or as Moses said, “Who is on the Lord’s side?” Exodus 32:26 Let them step forward.

James 1:21 (ESV) Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
