Follow up: Notre Dame Commencement

Several weeks ago I posted an article about the controversy surrounding President Obama’s visit to Notre Dame to deliver their commencement speech.  The controversy, of which now you’ve probably heard, centered around the abortion debate, primarily the Catholic schools opposition to it and the President’s favor towards it.  There were numerous protestors at the event including Norma McCorvey, a.k.a. Jane Roe of “Roe” vs. Wade.  Ms. McCorvey, who is now a prominent pro-life advocate, was arrested for trespassing following the demonstrations.

What I find incredulous about this story are the President’s comments.  “He still implored the University of Notre Dame’s graduating class and all in the U.S. to stop ‘reducing those with differing views to caricature. Open hearts. Open minds. Fair-minded words. It’s a way of life that always has been the Notre Dame tradition.'”

This sounds a little too much like compromise to me.  How can you compromise on your moral beliefs?  How are we supposed to compromise on right vs. wrong?  More thoughts from the President, “So let’s work together to reduce the number of women seeking abortions by reducing unintended pregnancies, and making adoption more available, and providing care and support for women who do carry their child to term.”

I guess there is our answer, more compromise.  We won’t stop abortions; we’ll just reduce them by reducing “unintended pregnancies.”  But let’s look at the facts.  Just last week, the President eliminated most of the funding for abstinence-only sex education and shifted it over to teen pregnancy prevention.  The abstinence-only programs emphasized a no sex until marriage message.  So now the message is no longer abstinence, but instead one that promotes sex/”safe-sex” and this is supposed to reduce the number of “unintended pregnancies”?

On the heels of last weeks poll showing the majority of Americans are now “pro-life”, it’s imperative that we continue to stand up for our beliefs especially on issues where the lines are so clearly drawn between right and wrong.  As Christians, it’s important we never compromise what God has instilled in our hearts.

Psalm 22:10 From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God

Psalm 139:13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

Ecclesiastes 11:5 As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.
