Making sense of the first week

Has anyone else been paying attention to the first week of the new administration?  I know in my post the other day http://voiceoftruthblog.com/?p=49 I said this wasn’t a political blog, but in my opinion it’s difficult to separate religion from politics.  After all, wasn’t Jesus crucified as part of a political agenda?  Wasn’t Pilate more interested in the opinion of the people?  Matthew 27:19-24

So what’s been going on this past week?  Well, certainly we’re all aware of the big stimulus package that’s awaiting approval, but did you know it includes several hundred million dollars for family planning contraception?  Speaker of the House Pelosi was quoted on ABC’s “This Week” as saying that, ” the family planning services reduce cost” and that “contraception will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government”.  Pelosi went on to say that “we have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.” http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=87161 This on the heels of a bill that reverses a previous ban on federal funding for international groups that promote or perform abortion (post to come later).

If that “family planning services” quote from earlier sounded familiar, it should.  Family Planning Services have been practiced in China since 1979 and The Population and Family Planning Law took effect September 1, 2002.  http://www.china.org.cn/english/2002/Oct/46138.htm Scary huh!?

Ok, now let me get this straight.  First we open funding for abortion.  Then we state that birth control will stimulate the economy and that caring for babies is actually a consequence of the downturn in our economy?  I know!  It sounds even dumber when you say it out loud.  Without question each of these programs goes against the fundamental truths of the Bible.

The Apostle Paul discusses sex outside of marriage throughout many of his letters, but one such passage is especially applicable.  Ephesians 5:3, “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.” (For an in depth discussion from Paul see I Corinthians 7:25-40)

I think there’s a better solution than going the family planning route and promoting contraceptives.  Perhaps a return to fundamental family values and the promotion of abstinence outside of marriage would be a better alternative.  It’s a biblical concept that just might make a difference
