Free e-book: How to Study the Book of Job – A Concise Guide

In 2017, I had the opportunity to teach through the Book of Job in a Sunday School type setting. Initially, I was given 6 weeks to accomplish what was to be an introduction and overview of the entire book. If there is one thing I have learned throughout years of teaching, it’s that in these settings, you never entertain the thought of teaching until you have a firm grasp on the topic, book, or passage.

In preparing to teach a brief overview on one of the more complicated books in the Scriptures it became immediately evident that lots of time was needed with Job. While there are several commentaries on Job, as with other books, they are less than helpful if you need to teach an overview/introduction to the entire book. Additionally, alongside the danger of getting bogged down in a commentary, there is the danger of simply regurgitating someone else’s ideas. This Free e-book attempts to avoid both of those dangers by providing a road-map for Job, allowing the reader to use it as preparation for studying Job, a guide or bible study to use in the midst of studying Job, or as a guide for group study of Job.

As an aside to this teaching opportunity and the later development of this e-book from my own notes and preparation, it was at this time that my daughter had a serious medical emergency that required a several day hospital stay and resulted in a later diagnosis of a major medical condition (thankfully by God’s grace it has stabilized). The very week that this occurred, I was preparing for the final lesson – the chapters on God’s response to Job (Yahweh Speaks). I say this not for sympathy, but to magnify God’s grace and to ensure the reader that Job is applicable today; that God’s word is very real. In my darkest hour I was able to draw comfort from a book of sorrows and learn to stop asking why and start asking Who.

May this small and feeble effort serve to magnify the richness of God’s majesty and be a light to those who have found themselves lost in the fog of God’s mysterious providence. May those who are walking or have walked through the shadows be able to draw upon Job to see God’s had in their lives and come to better understand His promises to never leave or forsake us (Deut. 31:8) that truly all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

May God be glorified and His people be edified as they embark on their journey through Job.
