The Century of Self

Yesterday in Consumerism, The Stumbling Block of a Generation I made mention of a man by the name of Edward Bernays, nephew of Sigmund Freud.  In that post I gave a brief overview of how his methods of propaganda to promote human consumption resulted in the selfish man-centered consumerism that dominates the world to this day.  The video below is a BBC production by Adam Curtis which gives a historical look into the influence that Bernays had on this country.  I’ve embedded the first video and provided the links for the remaining 5.  Please note that the production is secular in nature and some viewers may object to a reference (though not crude) made in video 2 and some disturbing images from WWII found in the last video.  Otherwise it is an extremely informative and historical account of how as a society we are where we are.

“Do not love the world or the things in the world.  If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” 1 John 2:15
