Bucket Drops 8/13/11

A Saturday edition of this week’s noteworthy news and happenings.  It seemed this week’s trend centered around young people.  Here’s a look at what’s being talked about:

NYC Mandates Sex Education for teens

Mandatory sex education classes for middle and high schoolers in New York?  Not only is the government usurping the authority of the parent, but the biblical teaching of abstinence.  Here’s Albert Mohler’s thoughts from the article: “Here is the bottom line on this issue: the New York City public schools now are mandating the teaching of sex education in a way that is intended directly to counter abstinence-based sex education.”  He adds “This is the logic of a society that has lost its sanity on sexual morality. It turns to teenagers and even, in this case, preteens and wants to instruct them about the age in which they can begin sexual activity, bereft of all other moral considerations. Oh and by the way, here’s how to use a condom.”

Youth Group Messy Games Olympics

“Youth from nine area churches competed in the Mountain Dew Chug, the MoonPie Smash, Banana Split Pyramid and, to top off the fun, a crawl through a muddy trench.”   Trust me, I get it.  They are kids and they need to have fun, but at what expense?  When the latest trends are showing us that upwards of 80% of high schoolers are leaving their faith behind when they go to college, is it critical they know Christians can have fun or critical that they know they Gospel and are able to withstand the schemes of the devil?  I wonder if the promotion read, “A Weekend of Bible Study and Fellowship with Brothers and Sisters in Christ” if the interest would be there.  If not, what’s the problem?  The lack of no fun or a disinterest in the things of Christ?

Government Disagrees on whether kids need Mom AND Dad

This is just a mess.  Here’s an idea, let’s let the government decide who can have kids, whether they need a mom AND dad, what they can eat, what they can learn, and when they can have sex.  Wait, that’s already happening.

Ex-Planned Parenthood Director Applauds China’s 1-Child Policy

Remember last week, we looked at two stories in which the government was endorsing free birth control pills and abortion pills without copay.  Now, check out this article from an ex-Planned Parenthood director who responded to the legislation we looked at, “Unless we act (this legislation, along with China’s “one child” policy, is a start), the world is doomed to strangle among coils of pitiless exponential growth.”  Just so you know, Planned Parenthood receives massive amounts of federal funding and has the ringing endorsement of our president.  If you have the time, it is worth doing some research into the organization.

Family First in Youth Discipleship and Evangelism

This is a well-written article from The Gospel Coalition highlighting the role of Church (youth pastor) and parents in the discipleship of young people.  I wholeheartedly agree with his assessment that the primary, and biblical, role belongs with the family.  I look forward to reading his next post on the value of a “biblically grounded and church-based youth ministry.”

Indoctrination

Finally, this is a startling promotional video for a movie called Indoctrination that informs us of the dangerous ideologies being taught to our young people today within the Public School system.  I realize there are a lot of good Christian teachers within public schools, but individuals tend to be silenced when an institution says you will teach x,y,z and will not mention a,b,c.  Christian parents beware.
