God Looks at the Heart

I Samuel 16:7 NKJV “for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart”

When I was a teen there was a Canon Rebel camera commercial featuring former tennis pro Andre Agassi, fully decked out in “Miami” style jacket, shirt and tie, sunglasses and his trademark spiked mullet.  After a promotion that focused as much on Agassi as the camera, he pauses, looks into our living rooms and says, “Image is everything.”  A classic punch line that no doubt sold a lot of cameras and generated a series of commercials.  But as the trends in that commercial have faded (I don’t think I’m alone in being thankful the mullet was one), the ideology has remained; in fact it’s probably increased.  Let’s face it, our society is image obsessed.  Everything is flair, bling, bedazzled (if you don’t know, don’t ask, I’m embarrassed enough that I know).  We want things that pop, things that are hot, trendy, flashy.  Big wheels, big houses, everything has to be bigger and better because it’s all a reflection of ourselves, who we are and how we are viewed.  We are engrained to think that everything is how we look or appear to others.  Friends, nothing could be further from the truth, because our Lord doesn’t care about appearance, He looks at our hearts.  In fact, the “image” that we get so wrapped up in actually distracts us and impedes our relationship with God.  How so you might ask?  The Bible is very clear when it states, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” Romans 12:2 NKJV It’s so easy to get wrapped up in worldly trends, but when we resist and fill our hearts with the Lord, how much more glory do we bring our Heavenly Father.

Jeremiah 17:9-10 NKJV The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? 10 I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.”
