Bucket Drops 7/22/11

Interesting news from around the world this week:

Book-Hoarding?  A warning on the dangers of book hoarding.  Something that every reader needs  to keep in mind.

Removing God the Father United Church of Christ drops “God our Father” from their statement of faith.  I don’t think there was much doubt that Jeremiah Wright wasn’t preaching the Gospel any way.  Why should this shock us?

Sitcom: Atheist goes to heaven A new sitcom, Afterlife, offers as its storyline an atheist who goes to heaven.  Just the latest addition to our pluralistic society that says all paths lead to God.

IHOP – A Growing Movement International House of Prayer – A growing movement.  Also known as IHOP, avoid this place at all costs as it operates much like a cult, has questionable leadership, and questionable practices.  You’d be better off slamming down all you can eat at the other IHOP.

Campus Crusade for Christ now just Cru Campus Crusade for Christ is now just Cru.  It has been for awhile on the college campus in my town, but I’m not sure what to make of this official announcement.  A statement from the Cru site reads as follows:

“We were not trying to eliminate the word Christ from our name. We were looking for a name that would most effectively serve our mission and help us take the gospel to the world. Our mission has not changed. Cru enables us to have discussions about Christ with people who might initially be turned off by a more overtly Christian name. We believe that our interaction and our communication with the world will be what ultimately honors and glorifies Christ.”

I’m not sure what else could be implied by “overtly Christian name” other than the name of Christ.  This seems either an attempt to remove the name of Christ as a stumbling block or a pragmatic method to become more effective.  Either way, it’s more than a bit confusing.

Remember in last week’s Bucket Drops one of the links was a church that was preaching a series based on Johnny Depp movies.  This week on K-love radio a couple of DJ’s were discussing how their church just had a series based on super-heroes.  In this video, Todd Friel of Wretched Radio/TV discusses some of these relevant tactics that churches are resorting to and includes his thoughts on Harry Potter.
