Do you know Him?

“Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?'” John 14:9 ESV

“Do you not know Me?”  That’s the simple question Jesus posed to Philip in response to his desire to see God the Father, in order that they might believe.  This is the question for you today friends, “Do you know Him?”  Nearly everyone claims to know of God, but do you really know Him?  “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them” Romans 1:19 ESV To know God extends so much deeper than a mere knowledge or belief in God.  James 2:19 ESV says, “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe-and shudder!”  Anyone can believe there is a God, even the demons, but do you know Him?  I John 4:8 ESV says, “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”  To know God is to love, but not just any love, like we may love our house, job, car, or cause, but to love as a product of God’s love for us when He sent His Son Jesus to die for our sins.  So that we might receive that love and extend it to one another, fulfilling “whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in Him.” I John 4:16 ESV Jesus stated the greatest commandment is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:37-39 ESV Author and Pastor Francis Chan offers the following observation on this passage, “Basically Christ is connecting the command to ‘love God’ with the command to ‘love your neighbor.’  By loving the ‘least of these’ we are loving God Himself.”  To know God is to love God.

Again I ask, “Do you know Him?”  To love God is to obey God, as Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” John 14:15 ESV and again, “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” John 14:21 ESV Love Him, Obey Him.  Jesus says in John 15:14 ESV, “You are my friends if you do what I command you.”  Do you see how this all fits together?  If you truly know God, you know the Father through the Son.  If you know Him, you love Him and you obey Him and your love manifests itself into the lives of others.  Keeping His commandments isn’t a duty or obligation, but rather an expression of love for the One who gave His life for us, a love that radiates from a relationship with the Savior Jesus Christ.   Oswald Chambers concludes, “The whole discipline of life is to enable us to enter into this closest relationship with Jesus Christ.”  Do you know Him?

Do you really know Him?  Do you want to?  You too can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, to know Him as Savior and have Him call you friend.  But in order to be in that relationship, you must surrender to Him, repent of your sins, turn from them, and look to Christ as Savior.  Believe on Him, that He gave His life for your sins, out of love, while you were still a sinner, Christ died for you.  That’s love.  He died and rose again that you might have eternal life through faith in Him.  Believe, Trust Him, Know Him, Love Him, Obey Him, Praise Him.
